COMMEMORATING THE 195TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE BATTLE OF QUEENSTON HEIGHTS
Niagara Falls, ON - On October 13, 1812, in what was the first major land battle of the War of 1812, an American invasion force crossed the Niagara River, scaled the Heights of Queenston and began to lay siege to the Village. Combined forces of British regulars, Canadian Militia, Native Warriors and a volunteer colour corps mounted a stiff resistance and defence of Canada in what was to become a pivotal Battle and moment in Canadian history.
To help honour and celebrate this event, The Niagara Parks Commission and its partners, Parks Canada Agency, The Friends of Fort George, The Niagara 1812 Legacy Council, The Niagara-on-the-Lake 1812 Bicentennial Committee, The Niagara Falls 1812 Task Force and Doors Open Niagara will be hosting a series of events on the Heights on October 13, 2007, to commemorate the 195th anniversary of the Battle.
A media conference is to be held to provide greater details on the events of the day, as well as to provide historical insights and perspectives regarding the Battle and what a typical soldier of the day encountered when this Battle took place. Renowned historian, Robert Malcomson, an expert on the Battle and author of A Very Brilliant Affair: The Battle of Queenston Heights will join NPC Chairman Jim Williams to speak at the media conference. Mr. Malcomson will be making a presentation on the battle, while Mr. Williams and other event partners in attendance will discuss their plans for the 1812 celebrations to be held on Saturday October 13th.
