Local Firm Awarded Table Rock Renovation Contract
(Niagara Falls, ON) The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) is pleased to announce that Charter Building Company of St. Catharines, Ontario, has been selected general contractor for the Commission’s Table Rock renovations project.
Table Rock House represents one of Niagara Parks most important venues, as it is the facility where close to 6 million visitors gather each year to witness the beauty and power of Niagara. The phased renovations planned for Table Rock have been designed to enhance the visitor experience of Niagara. In fact, according to NPC Chairman Jim Williams, “our changes are intended to celebrate our visitors’ arrival at this most special place. From landscaped gardens and covered walkways to a redeveloped upper level offering improved year-round interpretation, orientation and entertainment options, Table Rock is to be transformed into an experience befitting the incredible power of this location.”
After undertaking initial site work in the spring, phase one renovations are expected to begin this summer, with plans in place so as not to disrupt the tourism season. Renovations will include enhancements to the upper levels of Table Rock, including its restaurant, second floor retail space, an indoor public viewing gallery, as well as a new elevated pedestrian crossing and landscape improvements intended to enhance the year-round accessibility and safety of visitors entering the facility.
The Niagara Parks Commission issued tenders on this project to pre-qualified general contractors and electro/mechanical subcontractors. In addition, tender sets were delivered to three construction associations. Charter Building Company, based out of St. Catharines, successfully won the tender bid and it expects its renovation work will result in approximately 110 to 120 additional man-years of employment being generated for its local staff. Construction at Table Rock House is to begin in early spring 2007, and continue with minimal disruption to visitors until late spring 2008.
Employing 1,488 seasonal and 297 year-round staff, The Niagara Parks Commission is an Operational Enterprise Agency of the Ministry of Tourism. NPC’s mission is to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Falls and the Niagara River corridor for the enjoyment of visitors, all while maintaining financial self-sufficiency.
