Niagara Parks to Participate in Earth Hour

Niagara Falls, ON – The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) in partnership with the Niagara Falls Illumination Board are pleased to announce their participation in Earth Hour on March 29 from 8 to 9 p.m. by shutting off the illumination of the Falls. In this simple act, we will join millions of people around the world to raise awareness of, and support action on, climate change.

Earth Hour 2008 is a global, lights-out event, co-ordinated by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) that will bring together people from all over the world in support of action on climate change. It has grown from a single event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 to a phenomenal event this year that will occur across six continents and hundreds of cities. During the Sydney event, more than two million people and businesses participated, electrical demand was reduced by an impressive 10 per cent and 25,000 fewer tonnes of carbon dioxide were released into the atmosphere. The impact of a global event this year is expected to be tremendous.

NPC’s environmental mission statement is to "improve environmental quality and sustainable development throughout the Parks system for the benefit of visitors, employees and associates".  “Participation in the Earth Hour event symbolizes our commitment to energy conservation and the preservation of the environment,” said NPC Chairman Jim Williams.

More information about how to participate in Earth Hour is available at www.wwf.ca/EarthHour or www.earthhour.org.

The Niagara Parks Commission is an Operational Enterprise Agency of the Ministry of Tourism.  NPC’s mission is to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Falls and the Niagara River corridor for the enjoyment of visitors, all while maintaining financial self-sufficiency.
