The Niagara Parks Commission Receives Ontario Parks Award

Niagara Falls, ON – The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) was pleased to have received the Ontario Parks Association’s (OPA) “Protecting Tomorrow Today” Award today in a presentation at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture. NPC Chairman Jim Williams accepted the award from OPA Executive Director Eric Trogdon and Life Member and former OPA President (1975-1976) Tom Clancy.

NPC was selected for the award in recognition of its foresight and excellent management of the Niagara Parks System, which encompasses original natural beauty, strategic development and high quality environmental maintenance and historic preservation initiatives. “I want to thank the OPA for recognizing our efforts in maintaining and showcasing these lands, its history and environmental beauty” stated Chairman Williams, “We are proud and honoured to have been selected to receive this award. In the end, the term Protecting Tomorrow Today can be used to really describe our vision since 1885 and it will continue to be our stewardship commitment for years to come.”

Following this award presentation, Niagara Parks Naturalist, Robert Ritchie presented a lecture regarding the various environmental projects conducted by NPC over the past six years. NPC’s Parks Department works to preserve, protect, restore and rehabilitate the flora and fauna of its natural heritage areas for the benefit of citizens and wildlife. These projects focus on protecting and restoring biodiversity in the Niagara River Corridor Ecosystem, despite increasing pressures on it from threats such as invasive alien species, global warming, expanding human population and air and water quality issues, among many other challenges.

Formed in 1936, the Ontario Parks Association is committed to civic beautification, the advancement, protection and conservation of parks, open space and the environment as we practice “Protecting Tomorrow Today” in the province of Ontario.

The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture is located at 2565 Niagara Parkway North, Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Niagara Parks Commission is an agency of the Government of Ontario that has operated at no cost to the taxpayer since 1885.
