Niagara Parks Announces Distance Marking on Recreational Trail
Niagara Falls, ON – The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) and its partners are pleased to announce plans to have official trail markings put into place along its 56-kilometre Niagara River Recreational Trail. Starting on the weekend of October 13th and every weekend after, volunteers from Runner’s Edge along with Niagara Parks own dedicated staff will begin painting markers every half and full kilometre along this extensive trail.
With the goal of promoting active lifestyles and greater community use and enjoyment of the trail, these markers will also ensure increased pedestrian and road safety. Police and emergency vehicles will be able to quickly and accurately locate those in need of assistance thanks to technology in GPS mapping capability. “The running and cycling community had requested trail markers for quite some time. Thanks to a kind donation of paint from IBIS Products, equipment from Keen Line Marking and the pledge of volunteer painters, the community will now be able to gauge trail distances, and navigation of the Parkway will now be improved for both trail maintenance and emergencies,” stated Debbie Whitehouse, Executive Director of Parks.
Project partners making this project possible include Runner’s Edge, IBIS Products, Keen Line Marking and the Greater Niagara Circle Route. “This is envisioned as the first step in the marking of the complete Greater Niagara Circle Route,” says George Nicholson, Project Coordinator for Niagara Region.
Niagara Parks operates North America’s most completely maintained Parks system, with 1,720 hectares (4,250 acres) of Parkland and 56 kilometres of roads and recreational trails. It is, in fact, a city within cities; operating, controlling and maintaining its own police force, road maintenance, snow removal and transportation system and it has done so without the support of any ratepayer since 1885.
