Niagara Parks Commission and Illumination Board to “Switch off” Falls Illumination for Earth Hour 2011
Niagara Falls, ON – The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) in partnership with the Niagara Falls Illumination Board is pleased to once again announce its participation in the global Earth Hour initiative by switching off the evening Illumination of the Falls on Saturday, March 26 from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.
According to NPC Chair Fay Booker, “Our stewardship of the environment and nature are important hallmarks of our organization and it is why NPC is working in cooperation with the Niagara Falls Illumination Board to be part of this global environmental initiative.” During Earth Hour all non-essential lighting within the Parks will be turned off and as Booker explains, “we will also be ‘switching off’ our evening Illumination of the Falls during this time – as a symbol to help raise awareness and support for action on the issue of climate change.”
Earth Hour, coordinated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) unites people from all over the world in support of action being taken on climate change. It has grown from a single event held in Sydney, Australia in 2007, to a world-wide initiative that in 2010 took place in hundreds of cities in a record-breaking 128 countries. Last year in Canada alone, over 10 million people in 300 cities participated, placing Canada as one of the global leaders of this event. This year, WWF expects these numbers to continue growing and exceed last year’s 1.3 billion participants in this global awareness campaign.
Created in 1885, The Niagara Parks Commission is an Agency of the Government of Ontario. Established to preserve Niagara Falls and the Niagara Parkway for the enjoyment of its visitors, The Niagara Parks Commission operates at no cost to taxpayers.
