60th Anniversary of Whirlpool Golf Course
Niagara Falls, ON – Today, The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) was pleased to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its Whirlpool Golf Course. The day included a special news conference and a sold-out golf tournament, featuring a ceremonial tee-off using antique Persimmon golf clubs.
The spectacular setting of the course against the backdrop of the Niagara River Whirlpool and Gorge was designed by prominent golf course architect, Stanley Thompson. Whirlpool is among some of the most prestigious courses in Canada that Thompson designed – many of which are located in some of those most beautiful national and provincial parks in this country – Banff, Jasper and Fundy National Park included.
During her remarks at the news conference, NPC’s Acting Chair, Janice Thomson spoke about the history of the course and the Commission’s decision to create it, quoting an excerpt from the Commission’s 1956 Annual Report: “Commission policy is directed toward providing cultural and recreational enjoyment for all our visitors. Parks are for People.” Thomson went on to add, “It was this type of belief which resulted in the creation of Whirlpool and the engagement of Stanley Thompson, to design what has become one of Canada’s renowned public courses that we have all come to treasure.”
Thomson went on to add, “It was in recognition of Stanley Thompson’s efforts that the Federal Government in 2005 bestowed upon Mr. Thompson the designation of ‘a Person of National Significance’”.
The Whirlpool Golf Course, located at 3351 Niagara Parkway, Niagara Falls, Ontario, is owned and operated by The Niagara Parks Commission, an Agency of the Government of Ontario. It is NPC’s mission to protect the natural and cultural heritage along the Niagara River for the enjoyment of visitors while remaining financially self-sufficient.
