Friends of the Glen to Host Earth Day Event

Niagara Falls, ON – Friends of Niagara Parks, Niagara Glen group will be hosting an event at the Niagara Glen on Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The aim of this event is to educate and encourage sustainable activities within this designated nature reserve, including “Leave No Trace” practices. Visitors will also be provided with additional information on the sensitive wild flora and fauna that is found in the Glen. Community members are encouraged to come out that day and visit the information tents, which will be located near the top of the access staircase.

The Niagara Glen is an undeniable treasure trove of natural beauty. The rugged terrain masks a much more sensitive side that needs our help. Approximately 490 species of vulnerable plants and animals call the Glen home and an unprecedented number of them are listed as either “at risk” or “rare” in the province, one of the largest concentrations anywhere in Ontario.

Several other activities are planned for the day, including walks through the Glen and the planting of trees in honour of Earth Day. Local naturalists and members of the bouldering community will also be undertaking an inventory of the spring wildflowers that grow on top of the boulders located in the Niagara Glen.

In addition to the Friends of Niagara Parks group, other exhibitors will include: members of the Niagara Falls Trails and Bikeway Committee, the Bruce Trail Club, representatives from “Leave No Trace” and the geocaching community will be providing information to visitors. Those planning to spend the afternoon at the Niagara Glen are encouraged to bring their own bagged lunch and refillable water bottles.

New members are always welcome to join the Friends of Niagara Parks, Niagara Glen group. Their mission is to be a self sustaining and motivated not-for-profit community initiative that promotes land stewardship ethics, educational experiences, and sustainable outdoor recreation practices along the Niagara River corridor reserve, in concert with the mandate, mission, and vision of The Niagara Parks Commission. The group envisions an ecologically sensitive Park area kept for future generations by increasing environmental awareness and stewardship practices through community involvement. In order to facilitate this vision, the Friends of the Niagara Glen foresee an ongoing active presence within the Park through volunteer efforts.

The Niagara Parks Commission, an Agency of the Government of Ontario since 1885, operates to preserve and enhance Niagara Falls and the Niagara River Corridor for the enjoyment of visitors, all while remaining financially self-sufficient. Niagara Parks is responsible for the maintenance of over 1,700 hectares of parkland, roads and recreational trails stretching some 56 kilometres along the Niagara River corridor from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.
