For Immediate Release
December 12, 2011

Happy Birthday Nia!
Come celebrate with the first member of the Niagara Parks Police K9 Unit

NIAGARA FALLS, ON – Join The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) as it marks the first birthday of Nia, the newest member of the Niagara Parks Police Service, and the first member of its K9 Unit.

Nia, a black female German Shepherd, joined the Parks Police as a puppy in the spring. She was given her unique name, short for Niagara, through a public contest, which attracted almost 250 entries from across the province. The final winning name was then selected by a panel of Niagara Parks judges.

As a fully-trained police dog, Nia not only is a great ambassador for the service, but she is specifically trained to assist in crowd control, search and rescue efforts, as well as in the detection of explosives.

Nia’s birthday celebrations in the Grand Hall of the Table Rock Welcome Centre will include visits from some of her police dog friends from the Niagara Regional Police Service dog training course and Bones, the mascot of the Niagara IceDogs. Special Nia Birthday promotions at Table Rock include free birthday cake (while it lasts) and special birthday promotional discounts to be offered that day at Table Rock, including treats at Pop & Lolly’s Candy Shop and Nia plush toys.

• What: Nia’s First Birthday Party
• Where: Grand Hall, Table Rock Welcome Centre, Niagara Falls, Ont.
• When: Saturday, December 17, 2011, 1 p.m.
