Niagara Gorge Safety Tips

Here are some tips for visiting the Niagara River Gorge:

  • Don’t go alone and tell someone where you are going – do not visit at night
  • Bring a cellular phone but be aware that in the Gorge reception may not be available
  • Bring sufficient water and snacks, such as energy bars
  • Bring proper clothing including appropriate footwear for hiking
  • Protect yourself from the sun – wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Stay on marked trails and obey all signs
  • Don’t take un-necessary risks – don’t fall victim to “death by photo”
  • Listen to Niagara Parks staff including guides, interpreters and Niagara Parks Police
  • There are no approved swimming areas within the Parks. Niagara River waters are dangerous when entered and may be misleading.  Strong undercurrents exist as well as swift water conditions at the surface, which may result in downing.
