Redevelopment of Niagara Parks Marina

Niagara Parks will be investing up to $19 million of its earned revenue over a three-year period to fund the redevelopment of its marina property along the south Niagara Parkway in Fort Erie. This project will be undertaken at no cost to taxpayers.

The redevelopment plans will significantly upgrade the site and establish it as a new waterfront destination with increased public access and amenities along the shores of the upper Niagara River.

About the Marina

Located 22 kilometres south of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, along the Niagara Parkway in the Town of Fort Erie, the Niagara Parks Marina is the only marina on the Canadian side of the upper Niagara River.

Niagara Parks has owned and operated a marina at this site since the 1960s, offering a number of dock slips and modest amenities.

Vision

Niagara Parks’ vision for the redevelopment of the marina is to create a regionally unique, recreational destination that will serve both the boating and water recreational community across the region, as well as local residents and the visiting public who will be able to enjoy enhanced public space along the Niagara River shoreline.

Future Amenities

The redevelopment will increase the number of dock slips at the site to over 200, while adding new public amenities, including:

  • A restaurant and outdoor patio space
  • New public boat launch including designated area for kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, etc.
  • Public washrooms
  • Areas for fishing and infrastructure to support fishing charters and excursions
  • Improved recreational areas along the shoreline

The new marina will become an enhanced waterfront destination along the south Niagara Parkway, supporting new visitation and tourism to the area while potentially attracting more future investment around the site and providing a positive economic impact for Niagara Parks, the Town of Fort Erie and the entire region.

Next Steps

Niagara Parks will be issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design-build of the new marina with Niagara Parks remaining the owner and operator of the site.

The marina will be open for the 2024 boating season as normal. Niagara Parks is planning for the closure of the marina for the 2025 boating season to accommodate construction, with the goal of reopening the redeveloped marina for the 2026 boating season.

The redevelopment will be guided by Niagara Parks’ goals for the project including maximizing water-based recreation and related amenities, enhancing public access and activities along the Niagara River shoreline, and ensuring financial sustainability and community benefit.

A key component of the redevelopment will be public consultation, which will be undertaken in two phases to gather feedback from the community following the initial announcement and as design plans are finalized. Please check back regularly for project updates and information about the public consultation process.
