• Rock scaling operations at Table Rock scheduled for April 9 – 17, 2025
• Removal of loose rocks and debris to ensure safe operation of the observation decks at Journey Behind the Falls and the Niagara Parks Power Station
Niagara Falls, ON – Always a sure sign of spring, Niagara Parks will be conducting its annual rock scaling operations along the wall of the Niagara Gorge on the Canadian side of the Horseshoe Falls, from April 9 to 17, weather permitting.
Temporary Traffic Diversion
In preparation for this project, on Wednesday, April 9, all northbound traffic along the Niagara Parkway, starting from the Bridge of Flowers pedestrian walkway at Table Rock Centre to the nearby centre median will be diverted to the southbound lane for mobilization of equipment. Traffic delays will be minimal.
Cranes will be in place in the Table Rock area from April 10 through 17 for work above the Journey Behind the Falls attraction, as well as the Niagara Parks Power Station viewing platform. Visitors are advised to avoid fenced off work zones during this time.
Background
Niagara Parks undertakes this activity in the gorge each spring to remove any of the loose rocks and debris that have built up over the winter months, to ensure the safe operations of its attractions within the lower Niagara gorge.
To complete this work, Niagara Parks staff will be lowered in a cage over the parapet wall into the Niagara Gorge. A large crane operating from the top of the gorge wall will then slowly carry the workers across the face of the wall, some 13 storeys high over the Falls basin. Dressed in helmets and protective gear, workers then remove the loose rocks and debris; a process known as “ice-jacking”.
