Forest Management Work at Woodlot near Niagara Parkway and Service Road 30

  • Proactive removal of dead ash trees will address potential safety concerns that may arise due to proximity to the Niagara River Recreation Trail
  • Replanting will include a wide variety of tree species to ensure a more sustainable and resilient tree canopy

Niagara Falls, ON – As part of its Urban Forest Management Strategy, Niagara Parks will be removing dead ash trees that have succumbed to the effects of the Emerald Ash Borer within the woodlot along the Niagara Parkway at Service Road 30 in Niagara Falls, near Legends on the Niagara, beginning Monday, March 13.
Though not an immediate hazard, the trees that have been identified for removal pose a potential safety risk if left standing, due to their proximity to the Niagara River Recreation Trail. Over the course of the next month, contractors will be onsite felling trees, cutting branches and mulching to remove any hazards. All forestry work will take place on Niagara Parks property and may require temporary closures of portions of the recreation trail. Trail users are asked to take precautions and avoid use of the trail while forestry work is in progress. Signage will be posted to indicate when work will occur.
Replanting of the woodlot is set to take place later this spring and fall at a minimum 3:1 ratio, which will include a variety of native tree species, ranging in size, including maple, oak, hickory, and walnut, to ensure diversity. A diverse forest canopy will make the area more resilient to future threats, such as invasive species and a changing climate.
