McFarland House

Teal Map Marker IconAdd to Itinerary

For more than two centuries, McFarland House has stood as a monument to the impeccable demeanour, good taste and gracious living that epitomizes Niagara-on-the-Lake. Built at the turn of the 19th century by Scotsman John McFarland, the home was used as a military hospital during the War of 1812 by both the Americans and the British. Today, costumed interpreters provide guided tours of this historic home with several special events hosted throughout the year. McFarland House is the oldest property owned by Niagara Parks.

The home is nestled in McFarland Park, open for picnicking, walking and cycling with public washrooms available at the north end of the park.

The Garden Club of Niagara

The heritage gardens outside McFarland House are tended by the Garden Club of Niagara. They are designed the same way gardens would have been in the past, featuring a wonderful mix of items a home would need throughout the four seasons. Discover medicinal herbs, plants for culinary uses and flowers used for decorating. Many of the vegetables grown in the heritage gardens are used to create delicious items served inside the historic tea room.
