Niagara Parks to Host Majestic Monarchs: Annual Species Preservation Event

  • Public invited to engage in tag and release program to track annual migration patterns of monarch butterflies on September 9 and 10 from 11:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Free educational program provides information on how we can all participate in the preservation of endangered monarch butterflies
  • Live tag and release demonstrations available as supplies last

Niagara Falls, ON Niagara Parks will host its popular Majestic Monarchs program on September 9 and 10 at the Butterfly Conservatory, offering guests the unique opportunity to take part in the international research tracking program, Monarch Watch, which tags and releases endangered butterflies to track migration patterns as they begin their remarkable journey south toward Mexico.

All are welcome to attend this free educational and immersive event at the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory to discover the incredible migratory journey of the monarch butterfly and learn how they can help with our conservation efforts.

As pollinators, the monarch butterfly migration across the continent is essential for many ecosystems to survive. Monarch butterflies have recently been downgraded from a species at risk to an endangered species. Each butterfly that is tagged through this event will be available to track through the University of Kansas tracking website, Monarch Watch. These important programs allow researchers to identify the number of monarch butterflies in our area, collect data on their migration, learn how they are surviving in our environment and the actions we can take to protect their habitats.

The free educational event will take place in front of the Butterfly Conservatory, within the grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture. For more information, please visit niagaraparks.com/majesticmonarchs.

Environmental Protection & Education at Niagara Parks

Niagara Parks has a long-standing mandate to preserve and protect the natural environment. The Majestic Monarchs tag and release event is an example of how members of the public can actively participate in local conservation efforts in their own communities. For guests wanting to learn more about how to support monarchs and other pollinating species, Niagara Parks has established a pollinator garden route, which includes 12 pollinator gardens from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake, as well as interpretive signs developed in collaboration with local Indigenous artists and writers.
