History

On September 14, 1860, Niagara Falls was forever changed when 200 Bengel lights were installed to celebrate the visit of the Prince of Wales. Over the years, the Falls continued to shine brightly for royal visits and special occasions.

In the early 1920s, a group of local businessmen, known as the ‘generators’, championed the cause for better lighting. Their successful fundraising efforts led to the installation of 24 new arc lights and the establishment of the Niagara Falls Illumination Board on February 24, 1925.
