Niagara Falls, ON – On May 14, 2020, the Niagara Parks Commission approved a revised operating plan to open the Niagara Parks Marina at Miller’s Creek for the 2020 season. This plan will include completing essential repairs to the docks, opening the marina for seasonal slip holders, offering limited fuel sales, opening the public boat launch and offering public washrooms and a picnic area. These services will be ready once the essential repairs are completed at the marina, which is expected to be in approximately four weeks.
The Niagara Parks Board of Commissioners was able to make this decision following the Premier’s announcement on May 1, 2020, that golf courses and marinas could begin to prepare for opening, which was updated today to allow for opening. Niagara Parks has developed a revised operating plan for the marina for the 2020 boating season on a cost-recovery basis, including undertaking essential repairs to various docks.
Background
On March 31, 2020, following the provincial emergency order, Niagara Parks closed all of its outdoor public recreational amenities, including the Niagara Parks Marina at Miller’s Creek. Considering the impacts of COVID-19 on Niagara Parks’ revenues and staffing levels, the organization made the decision to freeze all discretionary spending, including capital repairs that were required at the marina site. As a result, Niagara Parks announced the decision to suspend operations of the marina for the 2020 boating season.
In addition to the marina at Miller’s Creek, Niagara Parks operates four other public boat launches on the upper Niagara River that will be reopened effective Saturday, May 16:
- Ussher’s Creek
- Netherby Road
- Anger Avenue
- Nichol’s Marine
