In partnership with the City of Niagara Falls and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 396, Niagara Parks will commemorate the 211th anniversary of the Battle of Chippawa with the annual ceremony at Chippawa Battlefield Park. The battlefield is located on the corner of the Niagara River Parkway and Edgworth Road, about two kilometres south of the Village of Chippawa.
On July 5, 1814, the Battle of Chippawa marked the beginning of the Niagara Campaign of 1814. This battle is recognized as the longest, most intense and bloodiest campaign of the War of 1812. Today, the historic battlefield is preserved by Niagara Parks, spanning 121 hectares (300 acres) next to the Legends on the Niagara Golf Complex.
The ceremony will begin with a welcome from Master of Ceremonies Sherman Zavitz, followed by remarks from Niagara Parks Commissioner, Ted Salci. A historical address will provide insight into the significance of the Battle of Chippawa. Canon Powell will lead a remembrance prayer. The event will continue with the laying of wreaths to honour the fallen, concluding with a solemn minute of silence.
The 41st Regiment of Foot Fifes and Drums will perform, adding to the historical ambiance of the event. Closing remarks will conclude the official ceremony, after which the Colour Party will march off. Guests are welcome to stay post ceremony for a talk about the battle and light refreshments. Cannons will be firing throughout the event, so guests are advised to be prepared for the noise.
