Niagara Falls, ON – Following the emergency order issued by the Government of Ontario last week to close all remaining outdoor recreational amenities, Niagara Parks will also be closing public access to the Queenston docks and boat ramp area effective Monday, April 6.
The Queenston docks and boat ramp, located along the lower Niagara River in Queenston, is a popular area for fishing; however, it is also an area where maintaining safe physical and social distancing can be a challenge. Out of concern for the safety of members of the public, as well as Niagara Parks staff, the access road to this area will be closed. The closure will be enforced by the Niagara Parks Police Service, who have increased their presence along the Niagara Parkway to help inform individuals on the emergency orders in place and the measures we should all be taking to stop the spread of COVID-19.
After first suspending all public operations on March 14 and closing all outdoor recreational amenities on March 31, Niagara Parks has installed increased signage in public spaces that remain open for walkthrough access only. Signage repeats the advice of public health officials on practising social and physical distancing at all times and leaving home only when necessary.
“We understand that the Queenston docks is a popular fishing area, especially as we come into smelt fishing season, but the health and safety of our guests and staff is our top priority. Our Premier continues to stress the importance of staying home as much as possible and we hope this latest closure encourages everyone to follow that advice,” said Sandie Bellows, Niagara Parks Chair.
