Niagara Falls, ON – Niagara Parks is pleased to partner with the Niagara Catholic District School Board to host a walk in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) on Tuesday, September 30.
Following the walk, there will be a program at Oakes Garden Theatre featuring Dr. Josh Manitowabi, Assistant Professor of Indigenous History at Brock University, who will share insights on the significance of Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous History.
Students, staff and trustees from Niagara Catholic will participate in the walk and hear Dr. Manitowabi’s presentation. The public is welcome to participate and is encouraged to wear orange to honour the legacy of residential school survivors and promote awareness. This initiative is inspired by Orange Shirt Day, a grassroots movement that began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor whose experience sparked a national conversation about the impact of the residential school system.
Members of the public are invited to join the student march by gathering at the Sandie Bellows Plaza in front of the Niagara Parks Power Station located at 7005 Niagara Parkway beginning at 9:30 a.m. The 2.5-kilometre walk will start at 10 a.m., heading north along the Niagara Parkway to Oakes Garden Theatre, at the foot of Clifton Hill.
To ensure a safe gathering, a full road closure of the Niagara Parkway stretching from Fraser Hill to Clifton Hill will be in place from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. For more information about the event click here.
Special Falls Illumination
On the evening of September 30, Niagara Falls will be illuminated in orange every hour for 15 minutes beginning at 7:00 p.m., in honour of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
