  • Niagara Parks partners with the City of Niagara Falls and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 396 to honour the legacy of the historic battle

Niagara Falls, ON – Niagara Parks, in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 396, will host its annual Battle of Chippawa Commemorative Ceremony on Saturday, July 5 at 7 p.m., at Chippawa Battlefield Park. The ceremony will honour the soldiers who fought in one of the most significant battles of the War of 1812 and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation.

The commemorative ceremony will begin with a welcome from historian Sherman Zavitz, followed by remarks from Niagara Parks Commissioner Ted Salci. A historical address will highlight the significance of the Battle of Chippawa and Reverend Canon Jim Powell will lead a remembrance prayer. The 41st Regiment of Foot Fifes and Drums will perform throughout the evening, adding to the event’s historic atmosphere. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of wreaths to honour the fallen, before a minute of silence.

Following the official ceremony, guests are invited to stay for light refreshments and a special presentation on the battle. Please note that cannon fire will take place during the event and attendees are encouraged to be prepared for loud noise.

Fought on July 5, 1814, the Battle of Chippawa marked the beginning of the Niagara Campaign, recognized as the longest, bloodiest and most intense campaign of the War of 1812. Today, the historic battlefield is preserved by Niagara Parks and spans 121 hectares (300 acres), next to the Legends on the Niagara Golf Complex.
